These pieces were inspired by my first journey to Australia in Sept 2003, lured my by children deciding they would live “across the ditch”. What I discovered there astounded me by its diversity in landform, geology, flora and fauna. I brought home a memento, some gum tree scented candles packaged in the most delightful box decorated with a hand painted gum leaf. Although the box caused a stir with a certain little beagle at customs, the scent of the candles and the beautifully designed packaging refused to fade from my thoughts. Another huge influence in these pieces were large chunks of opal, still uncut but polished, bringing forth from the bowels of the earth, the most amazing irridescent rainbows of colour. Undiscovered for eons under tons of dark earth until brought into daylight, they reminded me of buried rainbows. These bands of opal bearing strata are evident in each of the paintings above.
